The functionalist building of former Electric Utility corporation in Prague-Holešovice was the most advanced office building in Europe in its time. Architects Adolf Beneš and Josef Kříž won the architectural competition for the building back then. The construction began in 1930. The main building footprint is T-shaped; its central part is a monumental fifty-metre main nave surrounded with six-storey galleries.
However, it could be made two storeys taller thanks to the strippable design of the top floor. It was commissioned in 1935 and it is a heritage structure today with numerous unique technical solutions. They include two paternoster elevators at the sides of the main staircase. The storeys are also linked with a cargo elevator with a capacity of 15 tonnes, designed for lorries, which was unparalleled at the time. The importance of the Electric Utility corporation was such that the building was painted black in the Second World War to prevent bomber pilots from seeing them.
Kromě stavebních firem se na projektu podílí několik skupin restaurátorů a expertních kanceláří, práce jsou trvale monitorovány a konzultovány s pracovišti památkové ochrany. Rekonstrukci a přestavbu paláce Elektrických podniků lze s jistotou označit za jednu z největších a technicky nejnáročnějších rekonstrukcí památkově chráněného objektu na území Prahy. Je průlomová mimo jiné rozsahem stavební intervence, zapojením odborných skupin různých oborů a téměř laboratorním hledáním konečného řešení. V tomto ohledu přináší obohacení poznatků o meziválečné architektuře i možnostech při její obnově. Věříme, že odborná i laická veřejnost tuto zodpovědnou snahu v dohledné době spatří a ocení.
