Competitions are the water of life for the studio’s architects: formulating a concept quickly, completing it according to the tender criteria, and working on a presentation. Compared to the frequently tedious and protracted reality of ordinary projects, which take months and years to form and adjust, it provides a sudden opportunity to intensively deal with a single thing for a clearly defined period of time.

This is why we intersperse our own work with competitions from time to time, although it obviously brings complications for the organisation of work on other things. Allow me to recall two of the competitions that we have participated in.
The first of them concerned a new educational centre near the Želivka reservoir, the “Water House”. This task fitted perfectly with the topics that we are normally concerned with, and our design vision was eventually recognised with a Jury Award.
The other one was a competition for a new pavilion at the Prague Zoo: a South American jungle with a generous roof structure made of ETFE sheets, which are large-scale air-filled cushions that allow light into the exhibition area without the need to deal with any visible parts of the load-bearing frame.
